Glulam swimming pool – creates a pleasant environment for athletes and staff

September saw the opening of a new pool at Paradisbadet in Örnsköldsvik, for which Martinsons supplied the glulam and CLT. A skywalk almost 20 metres long connects the new pool to the existing water park.

Calming

“The new pool has been a great addition to Paradiset. Practically everyone comments on how beautiful and calming the new swimming pool is when they visit us,” says David Berglund, Managing Director of Paradisbadet.

But what about mixing wood and water – can wood withstand the hot and humid environment of an indoor pool?

The fact is that wood is an ideal framing material for this kind of building. Wood has several properties that make it a good choice for humid environments, not least its natural hygroscopic properties, which enable it to regulate humidity.

“Building a swimming pool in a non-corrosive material like wood reduces the risk of rust. The challenge lies in designing the connections, which are often steel, for this environment,” explains Jonas Lindgren, Key Account Manager at Martinsons.

Another advantage of building swimming pools in wood is its ability to moderate sound. A natural sound absorber, wood can play an important role in reducing noise levels and creating a more controlled acoustic environment.

“The chair of one of our two clubs said that his first thought when he entered the new swimming pool was ‘This is a place I want to be!’. And that is largely to do with the sense of calm and harmony. Since the opening, we’ve had many visitors expressing this very sentiment,” says David.

It has also created a calmer and more pleasant environment for those working at the pool.

“Staff say their working environment has improved significantly. They feel that coming to the new swimming pool is like having a little break. A break from the cacophony you get when using hard materials where sound bounces off the walls and ceiling.”
